Mead holds an MFA from Yale and a PhD from UCLA. For 10 years he was the artistic leader of A.S.K. Theater Projects, where he commissioned many original scripts (including Naomi Iizuka’s 36 Views) and where he curated a festival of ensemble-generated theater works that introduced many ground- breaking troupes to Los Angeles. He is formerly Portland Center Stage’s Director of Literary & Education Programs, where he shepherded the development of many plays, including Apollo, Outrage, Celebrity Row, Another Fine Mess and O Lovely Glowworm. He has served as a script consultant at numerous theaters and organizations, including the Mark Taper Forum, South Coast Rep and the Kennedy Center. Recent dramaturgy projects include The Whale, by Sam Hunter, for Denver Center Theatre Company, and Machinal for University of Portland, where he is a professor of theater history.
