Rebecca Martinez
Rebecca was born into a family of amateur musicians –she sang for the homegrown talent shows in Nebraska and Colorado and took salsa and swing dancing lessons as a teen. Despite her obvious affinity for the stage, her father required her to pursue accounting in college- a much more stable profession. Oh well. Rebecca hit Portland in 1996, and within a breath became deeply involved with the Miracle Theatre where she studied, danced, acted and eventually directed and choreographed. Rebecca has developed into a remarkable theatre artist: she is the founding Artistic Director of Viva la Cultura!; she is an ensemble member of Sojourn Theatre; for seven years Rebecca was an instructor for Artists Repertory Theatre’s Actor’s to Go program and then for four years became their Director of Education and Outreach. She now makes her home in New York City. Rebecca’s deep and unique knowledge of the Afro-Cuban folklore of the Yoruba people as well as her skills as a choreographer make her a perfect partner for the creation of this Playhouse production. Mac and cheese, fried chicken and biscuits and gravy and fried green tomatoes— oh anything fried really. Bring it on.
