Sharath Patel

Sharath was born in Baltimore and grew up moving back and forth between Athens Ohio, Appalachia and India. He studied abroad in Italy, Spain, Austria and London before coming back to the states for college where he was taking pre med classes and engineering— but somehow found time to do the sound for large scale rock and roll concerts. It became his passion. He transferred and earned his BFA in production design at Ohio University (while working for a touring Broadway Road House, NPR, and PBS radio) and went on to earn his MFA in sound design at the Yale School of Drama. He went to work in the profession immediately upon graduation and clearly no stranger to travel, Sharath began to design sound in theatres all over; from France to England to DC, Lincoln Center, Harvard, Virginia Stage Company, Aspen, the Berkshires and on and on he goes. In 2009 Sharath was the victim of a racial hate crime in Virginia. Six men assumed he was middle eastern. He was very badly damaged and during his recovery reconnected with a close friend in Portland. He came out to heal and be with her and we are the lucky recipients of his remarkable talents; this is his third design with Portland Playhouse. Sharath is partial to a nice chicken pot pie.
