Pearl Cleage

Playwright

Pearl Cleage is an Atlanta-based playwright currently serving as Distinguished Artist in Residence at The Alliance Theatre. The recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Dramatists Guild, she is also Atlanta’s first Poet Laureate. Her plays include Flyin’ WestBlues for an Alabama SkyThe Nacirema Society…What I Learned in Paris, and Angry, Raucous and Shamelessly Gorgeous. Her work is anthologized in Flyin’ West and Other Plays, published by Theatre Communications Group. In addition to the Alliance, Cleage has been widely produced, including performances at the Goodman Theatre, London’s National Theatre, the McCarter Theatre Center, Penumbra Theatre, Keen Company, Ford’s Theatre, the Huntington Theatre Company, the Guthrie Theater, Kenny Leon’s True Colors Theatre, Actor’s Express, the Black Repertory Company, the Old Globe, the Negro Ensemble Company, Arena Stage, Alabama Shakespeare Festival, the Ensemble Theatre, New Federal Theatre, and Actors Theatre of Louisville. Her work is widely taught and produced at colleges and universities across the country. She is also a performance artist working in collaboration with her husband, writer Zaron W. Burnett, Jr. Their groundbreaking performance work is the subject of a new documentary film Live at Club Zebra! directed by Matthew and David Adeboye. Cleage and Burnett also collaborated on In My Granny’s Garden, a book for young children, which was adapted for the stage by Rosemary Newcott and has been performed in Atlanta, Chicago, and St. Louis. The author of eight novels, including What Looks Like Crazy on an Ordinary Day, a New York Times bestseller, Cleage also co-authored with Burnett “We Speak Your Names,” a praise poem commissioned by Oprah Winfrey. She is currently at work on Off Day at Chickens, in collaboration with Burnett and a play with music, Letters from Aunt Nina, based on the music and memories of Simone’s niece, actor/singer Crystal Fox.

Maia Denzler is a costume and textile artist based in the Portland Metro area. They began working with the Playhouse as a member of the Apprentice Company and recently returned to Portland after completing their MA studies in Costume Making at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts in Liverpool, England. Recent credits include [BLANK] (Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts), Matilda, Passing Strange, A Christmas Carol (Portland Playhouse), Moving Stories, and Secret Stories (NW Dance Project). Their performance and textile art installation work includes The Born Project, and the Bumbershoot Festival Fashion Show and Dance Performance under designer Fuchsia Lin. Al Knight-Blaine

Al Knight-Blaine is a lighting designer working in theatre, dance, and performance art in Portland and the surrounding PNW. Alongside his day job lighting events and music festivals with Outlaw Lighting, he is the resident lighting designer for Open Space Dance and Night Flight Aerial, and the head of lighting at the Portland Institute for Contemporary Art. Al is a graduate of Southern Oregon University, with a BFA emphasizing in lighting design. Recent designs include Allie Hankins’ performance series By My Own Hand, The NOT-Cracker (Open Space Dance), Fright Night (Night Flight Aerial), and the 16th and 17th Risk Reward Festivals of New Performance. At Portland Playhouse, he was the head electrician for seasons 14, 15, and 16, and the lighting designer for Chicken and Biscuits. He’s thrilled to be back and working with everyone here again!!

LES (aka LRCFUNK) is a highly accomplished professional recording artist, multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and producer. With a diverse range of talents, LES has made his name in the music industry and has garnered recognition worldwide.

The legendary late John Blackwell Jr., “Prince main drummer”, recognized LES’s exceptional skills at just nine years old. This marked the beginning of a mentorship, as Blackwell took LES as his protege and nurtured his musical growth.
LES has had the privilege of touring/directing bands for Prince, Patti LaBelle, Anita Baker, Larry Graham, Lil Kim, Tevin Campbell, Syleena Johnson, Avery Sunshine, Roberta Flack, New Power Generation (NPG), Wayna and Durand Bernarr, just to name a few.

Now, a reintroduction to the world with his band LRCFUNK, LES has released his debut album “Emerald City”. His heart is to captivate audiences worldwide using his talents to touch, heal, inspire and to keep the funk alive!

Tessa May

Tessa May is an actress and entrepreneur based in Portland, Oregon. She is excited to be back at Portland Playhouse as part of the hair and makeup team and as an understudy. Recent credits include Joe Turner’s Come and Gone and A Christmas Carol at Portland Playhouse. Other stage credits include She Persisted (Oregon Children’s Theatre), Once on This Island (World Stage Theatre), Sweeney Todd, Clyde’s, The Light (Portland Center Stage), and Blink (Third Rail Repertory). She is the founder of TrapStep PDX and teaches at Portland Drama Club. Tessa is a graduate of the American Musical and Dramatic Academy (AMDA) in New York City and is grateful for all the support!

Hayley Lamsma

Hayley Lamsma has worked as a Stage Manager in Portland and the surrounding area for the last three years and is beyond excited to be working with the Playhouse for the second time. They have a bachelor’s degree in Theatre and Writing from George Fox University and have worked many with companies including Shaking the Tree, Lakewood Theatre, Penguin Productions, and Gather Repertory, in both SM and ASM roles. Previous credits include A Christmas Carol, Dancing on the Sabbath, Nora, Maltese Falcon, Pirates of Penzance, Alabaster, Almost Maine, Blood Wedding, Twelfth Night, Forbidden Fruit, Oliver! The Musical, and Our Town. She also has varying props design credits, as well as a perpetual desire to tell stories and experience art.

Dr. Lisa Collins is an educator, trauma practitioner, life coach, author, and strategic leader with over 30 years of experience advancing educational equity, organizational wellbeing, and trauma-informed leadership. She holds advanced degrees in psychology and education and serves as an Assistant Professor at Lewis & Clark College, where she teaches graduate-level courses and leads equity-centered leadership initiatives.

Dr. Collins is the Founder of Education Through Engagement, LLC, a consulting and coaching practice that partners with schools, nonprofits, government agencies, and organizations to embed trauma-responsive, wellness-centered, and DEI-driven frameworks into leadership, culture, and systems change. Her work integrates research, lived experience, and practical tools to support sustainable transformation.

She is the author of The Truth About Trauma: Break Patterns, Build Resilience, and Restore Joy, and is a sought-after speaker known for her human-centered approach to healing, leadership, and collective resilience.

Nneka D. Coxeff

Nneka D. Coxeff is a communications strategist, community wellness advocate, and social-change theater practitioner whose work centers storytelling as a tool for liberation, healing, and collective action. With a background in community engagement and public relations, she brings a dramaturgical approach to shaping narratives that honor lived experience and cultural context.

Nneka supports the development of stories by grounding them in research, ethical representation, and community voice — asking critical questions about purpose, power, and impact. Her experience includes facilitating advocacy workshops on college campuses, participating in social justice and community theater, and organizing community healing workshops, utilizing transformative prompts and providing sacred space to process trauma and grief, while encouraging personal and collective healing.

Nneka’s work bridges art and activism, ensuring stories are not only compelling, but responsible, resonant, and rooted in truth and integrity. She approaches dramaturgy as both stewardship and strategy, holding space for transformation onstage and beyond.

Pancho Savery is Professor of English, Humanities, American Studies, and Comparative Race and Ethnicity Studies at Reed College, where he teaches courses on modern and contemporary drama, African-American literature, American literature and culture, and American Indian fiction, and currently serves as English Department Chair. He has published essays on Ralph Ellison, Saunders Redding, James Baldwin, Adrienne Rich, Robert Creeley, Ezra Pound, Samuel Beckett, Paula Vogel, Tennessee Williams, Sarah Ruhl, Brandon Jacobs-Jenkins, Mike Lew, Lucas Hnath, Euripides, John Berger, Allen Ginsberg, Sonia Sanchez, Federico Garcia Lorca, August Wilson, Dominique Morisseau, and others. He serves on the Board of Directors of The Alberta House (Chair), Artists Repertory Theatre (Immediate Past Chair), Boom Arts (Chair), Clackamas Rep, Corrib Theatre (Chair and Literary Manager), Montavilla Jazz, Original Practice Shakespeare (Secretary), Our Children Oregon (Vice Chair and Secretary), P.E.T.E. Cherie Corinne Rice is also an actor, author, producer and founder of @guidedinspiration a body language analysis and coaching platform. Her new book The Root Of Awareness is out now. Recent dialect credits include- Primary Trust, The Alley Theatre; Fairview & Ms. Holmes & Ms. Watson Apt. 2B, Trinity Rep; Two Trains Running, Marin Theater; Lear-Marcus Gardley, Cal Shakes; Common Ground Revisited, The Bluest Eye, Our Daughters Like Pillars, Huntington Theater; The Wedding Band, Theater for a New Audience; and The Three Musketeers, Cleveland Playhouse. Kristen Mun-Van Noy

Kristen Mun-Van Noy was born and raised on the island of Oahu. She has been working as a fight choreographer and teacher in the city of Portland since 2010. She owes her training to Dueling Arts International and her time as assistant fight choreographer at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival (09-10) with resident Fight Director U. Jonathan Toppo. Her work in fight choreography led to her work in intimacy. She has been training with IDC (Intimacy Directors and Choreographers). Expanding her education into intimacy work also expanded her knowledge as a fight choreographer and an artist.

Kenyahta Sikes

Community Ambassador

Kenyahta Sikes is a creative entrepreneur, community leader, and cultural curator based in the Pacific Northwest. She is the Owner and Event Coordinator of Painted Entertainment LLC, an interactive art experience company that centers creativity as a tool for connection, healing, and self-expression. She is also the Co-Owner of Boss Talks LLC, an event planning company dedicated to producing women focused business development, leadership, and empowerment experiences throughout the region.

Guided by a deep commitment to community wellness and collective growth, Kenyahta’s work intentionally creates safe, affirming, and collaborative spaces particularly for women of color seeking meaningful connection, professional expansion, and sisterhood with like-minded women who share lived experiences. Her events blend artistry, dialogue, and intentional networking to foster both personal and professional empowerment.

Beyond entrepreneurship, Kenyahta serves as a Community Ambassador for Portland Playhouse, supporting arts access and community engagement, and currently holds the role of Secretary of the Board for Black Community of Portland, where she contributes to advocacy, visibility, and culturally rooted community initiatives. Through all of her work, Kenyahta remains dedicated to uplifting underserved communities, amplifying Black voices, and using creativity as a catalyst for healing, belonging, and impact.

Faith Lavon is thrilled to be performing at Portland Playhouse. Originally from Kansas, she left home after high school to study at Chapman University in Orange, California, and later graduated from the Joanne Baron and D.W. Brown Studios in Santa Monica. She proudly sharpened her craft in the theatre with HBO Workspace, Grove Shakespeare, and South Coast Repertory, with a recent highlight playing Gertrude Winklesworth-Bode in Jeeves Intervenes on the NC Company stage in Asheville, North Carolina. Her award-winning solo show, Women On The Verge, won Best Dramatic Script at United Solo in New York and Best One Person Show at the NAACP Theatre Awards. During Her time in Chicago, Victoria worked for Halcyon, Jackalope, Red Theater and Chicago Danz. She relocated to Portland to work with Oregon Adventure Theatre. Some of Victoria’s favorite roles so far include Officer BJ Steele from A Piece of My Heart, Bessie Coleman from Before Amelia and Prospero from The Tempest. Tyharra Cozier is thrilled to be joining Portland Playhouse as Kate in Angry, Raucous, and Shamelessly Gorgeous. A proud alum of Florida State University’s School of Theatre, her previous credits include understudying Bertha in Joe Turner’s Come and Gone and Silver in Paradise Blue, both at Portland Playhouse, as well as Delia in Blues for Alabama Sky and Ruby in Seven Guitars, both with Passin Art. When she’s not on stage, Tyharra flits around Portland—attending COHO Productions board meetings, teaching little ones at Curious Comedy Theatre on Saturday mornings, or doing fit modeling for various brands. She is deeply philanthropic and encourages audiences to support local organizations, including Rose Haven, a day shelter for women and children. Tyharra sends love to her family, friends, and her 12 yr old rabbit, Pegasus. @Tyharra

Ashlee Radney is an actor originally from Denver, Colorado. She attended PSU with a major in Theatre and then completed an Acting internship at the Portland Playhouse. Since moving to Portland, she has worked with the Artist Repertory, Portland Playhouse, Salt & Sage Productions, & Crave Theater. Her favorite roles include Juliet from Romeo & Juliet and Lulu from Shopping and Fucking. In addition to Theater Ashlee has performed with Spectral Transmissions, an installation art piece through the Portland Art Museum. Ashlee would like to dedicate this and future shows to her biggest fan, George Radney (her father).

Valerie Yvette Peterson

Valerie Yvette Peterson is an accomplished poet, actor, writer, director, and national speaker whose work spans theater, spoken word, journalism, and live performance. She starred in the Portland Playhouse Theatre production of Chicken and Biscuits and performs across diverse platforms, from stage productions to national speaking engagements. Valerie also leads her own production company, creating original works rooted in storytelling, voice, and lived experience.

She is the founder of PROJECT C.O.C.O.A. (Creating Opportunities, Creating Outcomes through Action), and through her signature workshop, “It’s Imperative to Speak Your Narrative,” Valerie equips participants with tools to cultivate authenticity, confidence, and voice. She has collaborated with the Poetry Society of New York’s Advisory Council and the Fertile Ground Festival of New Work’s GROW Award Panel, promoting BIPOC inclusion in the arts.

A published writer, Valerie’s contributions appear in anthologies and self-titled works through the Los Angeles Poets Society, Moonstone Press, Sims Library of Poetry, AuthorHouse, and TBN/Trilogy Publishing. She is the author of four books, and her work has been featured in NY Weekly, Atlanta Wire, Nashville Herald, San Francisco Post, and Speakers Magazine. Valerie’s spoken word is available on streaming platforms, YouTube, and The Numberz Radio Station 96.7 FM. She is a member of the Dramatists Guild, Academy of American Poets, and Black Speakers Network, and a 2023 recipient of the Joseph R. Biden Award for Public Speakers.

Affectionately known to many as ‘Pastor Ward’, ‘Reverend Renee’ or ‘RevRen’ has become an innovative and insightful motivational speaker and actor of stage, television, radio, etc. in her ability resulting to represent a variety of characters in real-time, drama and/or comedy genres with a proven ability to bring roles to life.

She has been blessed to appear on Grimm, The Librarians, Leverage, The Last Innocent Man (HBO), Poetic Justice, Class Action, as well as stage productions including: A Raisin In The Sun, The Devil’s Funeral, The Lesson, For Colored Girls, Organic Nation Listening Club, Crowns, Vagina Monologues, and Any One Of Us.

Pastor Ward ascribes herself as a ‘VISION-PRENEUR’ helping others procure their dreams into reality. Her faith in God along with the legacy of the women that have preceded her continues to fuel the fire of compassion, devotion and inspiration that illuminates through her today.

Madina Keita

A true thespian, Madina began her theater training at just two years old and has continued to captivate audiences with powerful performances. She has appeared as part of Portland Playhouse in Joy Comes in the Mourning, participated for several years in the Fertile Ground Festival of New Works, and starred in the short film All Over Everywhere, directed by Katie O’Grady. Her stage credits include Dolores Van Cartier in Sister Act, Miss White in Clue, Gwendolen Fairfax in The Importance of Being Earnest, Olivia in Twelfth Night, and Elizabeth Proctor in The Crucible, among many other productions.

An avid pianist, Madina continues to share her artistry through music.

For the past 12 years, she has been a dedicated part of the Annual Keep Alive the Dream Tribute to Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. here in Portland—the second-largest MLK celebration in the nation—produced through World Arts Foundation, Inc., where she currently serves as Lead MC, reflecting her longstanding commitment to community, culture, and legacy.
