Statement from Portland Playhouse
As we embark on the journey of presenting Matilda the Musical, based on a novel by Roald Dahl, we wish to acknowledge his complex legacy.
Roald Dahl has written stories that have been loved by generations. He was also a writer who made anti-Semetic statements, and engaged in racism, misogyny & transphobia.
In presenting Matilda the Musical, we do not endorse Roald Dahl's views, or ignore the harm he’s caused. Rather, we see an opportunity to engage in a broader conversation about the complicated intersections of art and societal values. We believe in the transformative power of theatre to open minds, stir dialogue, and promote understanding.
We are excited to tell this story about a community who encourage and help each other to face their fears and oppressive forces head on (and thrive despite them!) As we bring Matilda’s story to life on our stage, we hope it serves as a reminder of the importance of standing up against prejudice, advocating for fairness, and always striving to learn and grow. May we all feel inspired to share our own stories through imagination, risk taking, dialogue, and radical JOY.
