August Wilson

Playwright

August Wilson (April 27, 1945 – October 2, 2005) authored Gem of the Ocean, Joe Turner’s Come and Gone, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, The Piano Lesson, Seven Guitars, Fences, Two Trains Running, Jitney, King Hedley II, and Radio Golf. These works explore the heritage and experience of African-Americans, decade-by-decade, over the course of the twentieth century. His plays have been produced at regional theaters across the country and all over the world, as well as on Broadway. In 2003, Mr. Wilson made his professional stage debut in his one-man show, How I Learned What I Learned. Mr. Wilson’s works garnered many awards including Pulitzer Prizes for Fences (1987); and for The Piano Lesson (1990); a Tony Award for Fences; Great Britain’s Olivier Award for Jitney; as well as eight New York Drama Critics Circle Awards for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Fences, Joe Turner’s Come and Gone, The Piano Lesson, Two Trains Running, Seven Guitars, Jitney, and Radio Golf. Additionally, the cast recording of Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom received a 1985 Grammy Award, and Mr. Wilson received a 1995 Emmy Award nomination for his screenplay adaptation of The Piano Lesson. Mr. Wilson’s early works included the one-act plays The Janitor, Recycle, The Coldest Day of the Year, Malcolm X, The Homecoming and the musical satire Black Bart and the Sacred Hills.

Mr. Wilson received many fellowships and awards, including Rockefeller and Guggenheim Fellowships in Playwrighting, the Whiting Writers Award, 2003 Heinz Award, was awarded a 1999 National Humanities Medal by the President of the United States, and received numerous honorary degrees from colleges and universities, as well as the only high school diploma ever issued by the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh. He was an alumnus of New Dramatists, a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, a 1995 inductee into the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and on October 16, 2005, Broadway renamed the theater located at 245 West 52nd Street – The August Wilson Theatre. Additionally, Mr. Wilson was posthumously inducted into the Theater Hall of Fame in 2007.

Mr. Wilson was born and raised in the Hill District of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and lived in Seattle, Washington at the time of his death. He is immediately survived by his two daughters, Sakina Ansari and Azula Carmen Wilson, and his wife, costume designer Constanza Romero.

Lou Bellamy is the founder and Co-Artistic Director of Penumbra Theatre Company in Saint Paul, Minnesota. During his thirty-nine year tenure, Penumbra has evolved into one of America’s premier theaters dedicated to dramatic exploration of the African American experience. Under his leadership, Penumbra has grown to be the largest theater of its kind in America and has produced 39 world premieres, including August Wilson’s first professional production. Penumbra is proud to have produced more of Mr. Wilson’s plays than any other theater in the world. Mr. Bellamy is an OBIE Award-winning director, an accomplished actor, and for 38 years was appointed as Associate Professor at the University of Minnesota in the Department of Theatre Arts and Dance. Directing credits include plays at Arizona Theatre Company, Denver Center for the Performing Arts, Penumbra Theatre, Signature Theatre, Oregon Shakespeare Festival, The Cleveland Play House, Indiana Repertory Theatre, The Guthrie Theater, The Kennedy Center, and Hartford Stage Company.

Oluyinka is an Assistant Professor of Dance at Reed College and Founder/Artistic Director of Rejoice! Diaspora Dance Theater. Rejoice was built as a platform to create Black contemporary dance work with movement foundations from Africa and the African-Diaspora. Her choreography focuses on the complex identities, histories and futures of Black communities.

David Levine is a lifelong Portlander and former teacher who comes from a long line of educators-turned-actors, dating back to 1950's summer camp in the Catskills. Recent stage manager credits include: Thurgood at Cleveland Play House; Evolve with The Red Door Project; our orange sky and Samsara at Profile Theatre; and Amélie at Portland Playhouse.

Wanda is an award winning Costume Designer for over 35 years. In 1981 Wanda created a new concept “Retro-Spect Productions ” A Theatrical Modeling Company. Dayna Lucas is a costume designer and assistant from Detroit, MI, now based in Portland, OR. Dayna received her degree in Communications/Film Studies at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and eventually received a degree in Fashion Design FIDM in Los Angeles. She has worked in costume design for both film and theater over the past ten years. Her most recent theater work includes Amélie (Portland Playhouse, 2024), Matilda: The Musical (Portland Playhouse, 2023 and 2024), A Christmas Carol (Portland Playhouse, 2022 and 2023), and What the Constitution Means to Me (Portland Center Stage, 2024). Tyler Buswell is a proud drag queen (Donatella Nobody, she/her), actor, educator, scenic designer and multi-disciplined visual artist currently serving as Technical Director for Northwest Academy. He has worked as a scenic artist/carpenter or designer for ART, PCS, Third Rail, Theatre Vertigo, Oregon Children’s Theatre, Chapel Theatre, Bag&Baggage, Native Theatre Project and many others. He has ten Broadwayworld nominations for Outstanding Set Design winning for Bootycandy by Robert O’Hara with Fuse Ensemble and runner-up for Camelot at Lakewood in addition to a feature last year in American Theatre Magazine’s “People to Watch” in the PNW. Recent designs include Search For Signs of Intelligent Life at 21Ten and Chris Grace As Scarlett Johansson at PCS. Donatella can be seen all over the West Coast but mainly as the producer and host of an all ages drag brunch at Clarklewis Restaurant. Miranda k Hardy is a designer with a passion for space & time. Previously for Portland Playhouse What I Learned in Paris, The Piano Lesson, No Candy and AT the Playhouse A Kaddish for Bernie Maddof with Boom Arts and Fronteriza with PETE. A career in NYC and on tour led to settling in Portland where she has makes work with Portland Center Stage, Artists Repertory Theater, the August Wilson Red Door Project, Alicia Jo Rabins, Oregon Children’s Theater, Profile Theater, Theatre Diaspora, Hand2Mouth, Reed College and looks forward to new artistic collaborations. She is a PETE (Portland Experimental Theater Ensemble) company member and is currently an adjunct instructor at Lewis & Clark College teaching design courses and mentoring students in design and production. Her work has been seen nationally and internationally focusing on the New and Experimental while staying grounded in the generally possible impossible. CalArts/NYC/PDX.

Rory Breshears is a Portland based sound and video designer, working in live performance, broadcast, and installations. A graduate of WIllamette University who also works in a variety of other roles from production manager to network engineer, he's most recently collaborated with Third Rail Repertory Theatre, Profile Theatre, Stumptown Stages, CoHo Productions, and Portland Playhouse. He is also the head stagehand of the Portland'5 Winningstad Theatre.

Thyra is a production manager, stage manager and technical director. Her training includes an MFA in production and design with a concentration in stage management from the University of California, Irvine, as well as almost two decades in ballet production. Thyra has toured and worked with companies around the world including San Francisco Ballet, American Ballet Theatre and the Bolshoi Ballet. Locally she’s also worked with Oregon Ballet Theatre, Profile Theatre, White Bird, Portland Taiko and Northwest Dance Project. Thyra has taught high school stagecraft as well as college-level stage management locally.  

Norman Sylvester

Blues Guitar Consultant & Music Creation

Norman Sylvester was born on his Grandmother's Farm in Bonita Louisiana in 1945. His family moved to Portland for work when he was 12 years old. He learned to play guitar and sing from his high school friend Isaac Scott (later became Seattle King of the Blues). They first played in church and then for the many Social Clubs in Albina back then. Norman played in Soul and Funk bands in the 60's, 70's & 80's but wished to return to his Southern roots of the Blues, starting the Norman Sylvester Band in 1985. Known as the “Boogie Cat, he's an icon in our local Blues history. His band celebrates 40 years of playing around the N.W. and also the many ways they give back to their community. Tevis Hodge Jr

Tevis Hodge Jr. was born in Woodbridge, Virginia. His father passed away when he was just 10 years old and after a move, he eventually lost contact with his family from the South. At age 12 he started playing the Blues to feel that connection with his fathers’ family and the musical journey of his Black heritage. Tevis is passionate about Blues traditions and preserving the deep & rich roots of this music. He is a Historian along with being a talented musician embracing many music forms like; Jazz, Ragtime, Jug-band & Folk in his performances. Tevis is a gift from the past with his style of playing, singing and storytelling, which give him his unique approach to the Blues. He can be found around the Portland area performing the Blues of the Mississippi Delta.

Keela Johnson She/Her

Cultural Competency Consultant

Keela Johnson (she/her) is a cultural consultant who has dedicated over eight years to working with Portland Playhouse and impacting the community. Her work on numerous productions has created spaces of confidence, accountability, cultural understanding, and connectivity. Inspired by her work with PPH, Keela established a Capstone Course at Portland State University, where she is an instructor. The course is titled Community Healing and Theater. Keela also develops activities to foster connection and resolve conflict, facilitating TalkBacks with the audience and artists. She aims to provide spaces of connectivity and community, encouraging everyone to strive for loving-kindness and empathy. She believes that the arts are a platform for illuminating the human experience and fostering connections of the human spirit. According to Keela, we own our stories, which enable us to connect, and we have the right to share them without apology.

Very much a language and Shakespeare lover, some of her favorite recent roles include Malvolia in Twelfth Night (Willamette University) and Rosalind in As You Like It (Saltfire Theatre).

Bermea has appeared in theaters from New York, NY to Honolulu, HI, including La Mama in New York, NY, Centerstage in Baltimore Maryland, Kansas City Rep, Capitol City Playhouse in Austin, TX, and the Hawaii Theatre in Honolulu, HI. As a resident of Portland, he’s performed at Portland Center Stage, Artists Repertory Theatre, Profile Theatre, Milagro, Sojourn Theatre, Cygnet Productions, BoomArts, the Jewish Theatre Collaborative, Tygre’s Heart, Life in Arts Productions, and Shaking-the-Tree. Lester Purry has appeared as Cutler in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Antonio in Much Ado About Nothing at American Players Rep; Corn in Paradise Blue at Penumbra Theatre; J.P. Madison in What I Learned in Paris. He performed the role of August Wilson in his one man show How I Learned What I Learned at The Edinburg Fringe Festival, and has performed in regional theatre across the country including a national tour as Othello in Othello, and as Augustus Newcastle in The Darker Face of the Earth and Lester Mason in The Big White Fog, all with The Guthrie Theatre.

A long time company member with Penumbra Theatre where August Wilson was discovered, Purry has played the roles of Cory in Fences, Clay in Dutchman, Hambone in Two Trains Running, Lymon in The Piano Lesson (the production that Wilson said was the best he’d ever seen), Hedley in King Hedley II, and Booster in Jitney, to name a few. At Baltimore Center Stage Purry was Marvell Thunder in Thunder Knocking on the Door, as well as King of the Hill in You Can Stop On a Dime. He played Lymon the The Piano Lesson, Scarus in Antony and Cleopatra, and Mordred in Camelot at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival. Purry performed at Philadelphia Theatre Company as Floyd Barton in Seven Guitars, Arizona Theatre Company as Wolf in Two Trains Running, and as Troy Maxson in Fences at Portland Playhouse, Palm Beach Dramaworks and Los Angeles Performing Arts Center. He also played the role of Aslan in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe at Children’s Theatre Company,  Most recently he performed the role of Charles Grace in Fireflies at South Coast Repertory Theatre and in Thurgood as Thurgood Marshall at Geva Theatre Center, Portland Playhouse and Penumbra Theatre.

Outside the Portland area he has performed with the Denver Center of the Performing Arts, and Montana Rep. Xzavier Beacham is a classically trained actor and creative, who received his Bachelors in Public Relations from Concordia University opting to develop and complete the theater minor before graduating. After graduation, he furthered his studies attending The Actors Conservatory in Portland Oregon for two years. He has by this point worked in the industry for over 10 years.

Recently, Beacham performed in a production of Zora and Langston, being blessed to have the opportunity to play Langston Huges down in Sacremento California. Recently this production went on to win best production/best scored production at SheLa Summer Theatre Festival.

In his own work, he is producing a short series called For Your Eyes Only: A Non Profit for Banned Books, and Hump Drive: A kids show for adults.

Ashlee Radney (She/Her)  is an actor originally from Denver, Colorado. She attended PSU with a major in Theatre and then completed an internship at the Portland Playhouse. Since moving to Portland she has worked with the Artist Repertory, Portland Playhouse, Salt & Sage Productions, & Crave Theater. Her favorite roles include Juliet from Romeo & Juliet and Lulu from Shopping and Fucking.  In addition to Theatre Ashlee has performed with Spectral Transmissions, an installation art piece through the Portland Art Museum. She currently has her own project in the works. Keep a watchful eye for this new playwright and her play Cranberry Peaches!  Ashlee would like to dedicate this and future shows to her biggest fan, George Radney ( her father).

Tessa May (She/Her)  is an actress and entrepreneur from Portland, Oregon, with a strong foundation in both the arts and fitness. She is excited to return to Portland Playhouse following her role in A Christmas Carol. Tessa’s stage credits include She Persisted (Harriet/Flo Jo, OCT), Once on This Island (Papa Ge, World Stage Theatre), Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Clydes, and The Light (Braid Designer, Portland Center Stage), and Blink (Sophie, Third Rail Repertory). Beyond acting, Tessa owns TrapStep PDX, a fitness company blending dance and Step Aerobics, and teaches at Portland Drama Club. A proud graduate of the American Musical and Dramatic Academy (AMDA) in New York City, Tessa is deeply thankful for the continuous support of her grandmother. Cycerli is honored to be back. She was last seen as Aisha in Mrs. Harrison at Portland Center Stage. Cycerli is a Professor and guest instructor/director at Portland State University and George Fox University respectively. She has her MFA in Acting from the University of Tennessee and her BA in Theatre from Rutgers University where she was also a Division 1 athlete in Track and Field. She is a proud member of Actors Equity and Screen Actors Guild. Cycerli has graced many stages. Some of her theatre credits include Evie at Penumbra Theatre, Cynthia in Sweat at The Denver Center and Profile theater, Delia in Spunk at Kenny Leon True Colors, Scrooge in A Christmas Carol at Portland Playhouse, Vera in Seven Guitars at Passin Art, Dr. Van Helsing in Dracula at Portland Center Stage. She has worked for The Red Door Project, The Alliance theater, Dominion, and Clarence Brown theater. She is the CEO and founder of the faith-based theater company DAE productions located in Atlanta GA. She has worked for Warner Brothers, Lionsgate, and her most recent movie released on Amazon Prime called Cellar Door starring Laurence Fishburne. Nia is very excited to be returning to Portland Playhouse after appearing as Matilda in Matilda The Musical! Prior recent credits include Little Inez in Hairspray (Stumptown Stages), Pete in It's a Wonderful Life (Stumptown Stages), Young Lola/Simon in Kinky Boots (Stumptown Stages), and Little Kid in Matilda The Musical (Journey Theater). Nia has also participated in musical theatre classes and shows at Spotlight Musical Theatre Academy, where she began her training. Nia is in the 5th grade and loves reading, dance, singing, and hanging out with her friends and sisters. She also works professionally as a model and actor appearing in many ads campaigns, runway shows, and commercials. Kamari Rivers is a 13-year-old Portland native and 7th grader making his stage debut! When he's not on the court playing basketball or gaming with friends, he’s writing powerful poetry. Kamari has performed his spoken word at his school, the state capitol, Portland’s Juneteenth celebration, and beyond. His poetry uplifts and empowers young Black boys like himself, reminding them that they are enough. He also speaks out against the brutality Black males face, using his words as a tool for change. Kamari created the acronym BLACK—Beautiful, Loved, Accomplished, Creative Kings—to inspire his community. You may also find him at local BIPOC events selling T-shirts with affirmations celebrating Black boys' worth and resilience. Kamari is excited to bring his voice and energy to the stage for the first time!

Steve, a Portland native, grew up near the Portland Playhouse and was actively involved in the city's theatre scene before moving to Washington, D.C. to pursue a career in politics. He recently returned to the Pacific Northwest. Seven Guitars, at Passin’ Art was Steve’s first performance in an August Wilson play. Joe Turner’s Come and Gone is his second. In 2023, he performed with the Original Practice Shakespeare Festival, and his upcoming film, Music is Life, produced by Raven River Productions, will premiere later this year. His other notable performances include A Raisin in the Sun (New Rose), The Little Foxes (Portland Rep), Of Mice and Men (Sumus Theatre), Toys in the Attic (Artist’s Rep), Division Street (IFCC), and A Midsummer Night's Dream (IFCC).

DJ is thrilled to return to Portland Playhouse after performing as The Ghost of Christmas Present in A Christmas Carol. Some other Playhouse productions that you might have seen them in include, Doctor/Cook/Sergei in the remount of Matilda, Franklin/Mr. Venus in Passing Strange, and as a member of the pit ensemble in Crowns. DJ graduated from William Peace University with a BFA Degree in Musical Theatre. They have also appeared in: Rent at Portland Center Stage as Collins, Choir Boy as David Heard, and as the title role in Hedwig and the Angry Inch. Adam John Roper, a performer hailing from the East Coast, proudly holds a BFA in theatre from NYU/Tisch School of the Arts, with intensive training at both the Stella Adler Studio of Acting and the Experimental Theatre Wing. Adam is thrilled to be returning to Portland Playhouse having recently understudied in AMELIE. Dr. Jari Haile is excited to be making her Portland Playhouse debut. Dr. Haile is new to the Portland area. She was involved in many professional regional productions in the Phoenix metropolitan area. Select credits include Kendra Ellis-Connor in American Son, Billie Holiday in Lady Day at Emerson Bar and Grill, Ella in Cinderella, Squeak in The Color Purple, and Ensemble in Dreamgirls. Her other passions include educating others on the benefits of physical therapy, health and wellness as well as being an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of Southern California’s Division of Biokinesiology and Physical Therapy. Aari Gould is from Salem, New Jersey, and is an alumni of Wilkes University. She is so happy to be a part of the Portland Playhouse family as an acting apprentice for the next 10 months!
